RCS (Rich Communication Services) is making a big splash in the messaging world – and for good reason, as it’s probably the most exciting update since MMS showed up back in 2002. What makes RCS different is that it works much like the chat apps we’re familiar with, such as Messenger or WhatsApp, but the conversation happens right inside the phone’s default messaging app. That means there’s no need to download any new app or go through any kind of setup flow as a receiver of RCS messages.
This marks an important step forward for businesses. You can reach your customers exactly where they already are and make those messages much more engaging with pictures, videos, clickable buttons and interactive flows. It’s messaging that feels natural but with so much more to offer.
Where is RCS Available?
RCS Business Messaging – where organizations send messages to many customers at once – has been available in parts of Europe, including Germany, the UK and France, for over a year. Some countries took a bit longer to get all phone operators on board, so the reach has been growing gradually.
We’re pleased to say that RCS is now available in several more countries, although coverage is still expanding. If you want the most up-to-date info, it’s a good idea to check with your sales contact. And if you’re interested in the technical side, there’s more info about the API you can use to send RCS messages.
One last thing to keep in mind: while RCS adds a lot of new possibilities, SMS is still a key player because it works almost everywhere. The two technologies work hand in hand, with SMS stepping in as a reliable backup when devices or networks don’t support RCS just yet.
Stand out with a verified sender profile
RCS uses verified sender profiles. When recipients open an RCS message, they can click the Sender ID to learn more about who’s reaching out. Your sender profile travels with every message, which makes it super easy for recipients to get additional details about you – and confirm that the message isn’t spam. In some cases, carriers even display a pop-up confirming that the sender is verified (see image below).

Sender IDs in RCS messages are protected so only verified senders can use them. This helps keep communication secure, prevents spoofing and builds trust with your recipients.
Sender profiles also let you showcase your brand. You can set up graphical elements – including your logo, banner and key business info – so recipients know exactly who’s reaching out and what you stand for.

RCS use cases
Below you’ll find several examples showing how RCS messages can grab recipients’ attention and encourage them to interact. These samples demonstrate how RCS creates richer messaging experiences just as smoothly as SMS.
Some include “light” RCS versions, with only basic features, alongside extended versions that showcase advanced options like carousels and call-to-action buttons.
Keep in mind that these examples highlight the full range of RCS possibilities. However, not all functions are currently available in RelationCity. Our goal is to give you a clear idea of what RCS business messaging can do when all features are in play.
Sending one RCS Single message instead of chained SMS messages
An RCS Single message can hold up to 3,072 characters, making it ideal for cases where your messages are longer than usual. For example, the message below has 724 characters. Normally, sending that would take five separate SMS messages. With RCS, it fits into just one message, saving you money.

Campaigns
For businesses, RCS opens up fantastic ways to showcase products and tailor messages to individual customers based on their past behavior. URL previews let you display product images right within the message, making it easy for customers to see what you’re offering. Plus, read receipts help you track how many people open your campaigns – perfect for testing and improving your messages.
RCS also supports advanced features like product sliders and a “buy now” button that takes customers straight to checkout, making the buying process smoother and faster.

Appointments
RCS lets you send appointment reminders that do more than just notify. You can include all the important details, checklists or even video guides to help recipients come fully prepared. And if a device doesn’t support RCS, the message will switch to SMS which ensures that critical reminders still get through.

Service updates
Use RCS messages to keep recipients informed every step of the way. Whether it’s package delivery updates, flight information, car repairs or mortgage progress, RCS lets you add interactive buttons and extra details to make the experience smooth and engaging. This way, customers get all the information they need right within the message, making their journey easier and more transparent.

Lead generation
RCS lets you offer customers a full 360° experience of your product or service before they even book an appointment. Plus, with all the interactive features RCS offers, you can gently guide users toward taking the next step you want them to.
